Many homeowners are looking for remodeling to match their new reality after spending more time at their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Open floor plans and remote study spaces are now in favor of dedicated areas. Renovating walls and transforming yards into entertainment areas is a trend. The renovation process may be slowed down by safety concerns and growing demand.
These are five home-remodeling trends you should be paying attention to in 2021.
1. A FOCUS ON SPECIALIZED AREAS
Jimmy Dollman of Dollman Construction, Roanoke Virginia, said that open space was the most desired architectural concept at the beginning of 2020. We now face distinct design implications, however, as everyone's living circumstances have changed.
Dollman says that remote employees and learners need privacy and quiet. He says that it was not common for one family member to work remotely a year ago. "Now, due to the loudness of the open design (parents and children) are having difficulty getting work done."
This year homeowners will spend more time creating separate spaces in their spare rooms and nooks than tearing down walls to make space for others. This could include installing a home theatre or home office or even converting a nook to a distance-learning environment.
2. FIND ROOM IN YOUR HOME FOR OFFICES
Doug King, president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and owner of King Contracting in St. Petersburg, Florida says that homeowners are not adding square footage to their home offices. They are removing infrequently used closets in hallways and moving inner walls to create space.
He notes that the home office trend won't be going away any time soon.
King states that even after the pandemic has passed, there will still be many people working from home. He also observes that home technology is expanding, with more homes installing ethernet cables and Bluetooth speakers.
3. MORE OUTDOOR LIFE
Outdoor living spaces are one way to get out of that feeling of being trapped.
King says that people want their backyards as their oasis. He believes that pools are the best thing for his neighborhood. In backyards, pools are the No. 1 thing. The next most popular are outdoor kitchens and firepits.
If homeowners spend more time at their homes, they may look into remodeling projects that bring the outside world inside. This could include installing larger windows and doors that allow in more natural light.
4. LONGER WAIT TIME
The business may slow down and homeowners might see changes in design trends. Due to safety concerns, contractors and workers may have changed their approach to certain projects. Dollman states that he has stopped all work in occupied houses "to protect residents and our staff" to avoid COVID-19 exposure.
As demand increases and the people who approve permits adjust to working in new environments, such as at home or with a small group of people, permits can sometimes take longer to get.
5. STRONG COLORS
Do-it-yourselfers who are unable to afford professional help will find many inexpensive ways to make their homes more welcoming this year.
Bold colors and color combinations were prominent in the Color of the Year 2021 winners announced by brands like Pantone, Sherwin Williams, and Benjamin Moore. This suggests that they are gaining popularity. Sherwin Williams selected Urbane Bronze (a dark brownish-grey color); Benjamin Moore selected Aegean Teal, a blue-green color; and Pantone chose a color combination: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Gray, which is a grey tone and a bright yellow color.
These are some of the most popular paint colors for homeowners. They can add depth, energy, and personality to a space without overdoing it.
